Google Lat Long: Introducing Google Maps Coordinate: Organize teams on the move

Google Lat Long: Introducing Google Maps Coordinate: Organize teams on the move

How it works

Real-Time Visibility

All team members can be seen on a Google Map. By assigning jobs to the nearest worker, more tasks can be completed in a shorter amount of time. Administrators can dispatch jobs with the confidence that an individual's location is correct. You are able to upload your own floor plans, and locate workers and jobs indoors based on wifi information.

Job Management

Workers can see a list of their jobs, and check in to show that they have started. This reduces miscommunication between the worker and dispatcher. Workers are able to minimize down time between tasks and complete a higher number of jobs per day.

Data Capture

Using their mobile device, workers can view detailed information about the job, as well as add their own notes which are immediately stored in the cloud. This eliminates paper-based workflows, duplication of work and saves teams from losing information.

Custom POI

A custom point of interest (POI) enables you to add information to a map such as customer sites, the location of facilities, or areas to avoid. This means that workers can be accurately directed to the right place, saving time and increasing efficiencies. As more POIs are added, the learning curve is reduced for workers new to a particular area.

Job and Location History

The location history of each worker can be shown, which helps to make more informed decisions about how teams operate and improve the efficiency of the mobile workforce. Administrators can see all details regarding a specific job. Over time, this builds a rich database of job details, which you can reference for continual improvement.

Global Event: Survey Earth in a Day and International Surveyors Week

Survey Earth in a Day
By now, you may have all read about Survey Earth in a Day Project on Land Surveyors United Network.  What you may not know yet is how this project fits within the larger idea of unifying the geospatial industry across the globe.  What I am about to layout for you is a bold ambition which has never before been tried in the surveying industry, so let's first understand how Survey Earth in a Day fits within the calendar of International Land Surveying Events.

Take a Look at Our Global Member Map with close to 3000 members worldwide!

International Surveyors Week 2012

International Surveyors Week
Back in October of 2011, Scott Warner and I began working on the International Surveyors Week,  idea which has historic origins in the National Surveyors Week, which is observed throughout the United States. Unlike National Surveyors Week, however, International Surveyors Week would give geospatial professionals in ALL areas of the world an opportunity to be a part of a larger community which allows surveyors to celebrate both similarities and differences in the industry, cross culturally and without language barriers.  From today until the end of time, International Surveyors Week will take place globally from June 17th-23rd.

Land Surveyors University

Land Surveyors University
When you first applied for membership on Land Surveyors United, one of the questions you were asked was "How would you rate your level of experience on a scale from 1-10?"  Approximately 210 of us rated ourselves as a Level 10 land surveyor, which leaves about 2000 members who rated themselves between  Level 1 and Level 9.  In this global experiment, we will determine as a community what a land surveyors with Level Ten experience should be able to easily accomplish.

We first began Land Surveyors University during the month of November 2011 and due to its experimental nature, we actually had no idea how long it would take to actually complete 10 levels of experience in surveying  as a global community.  What we did know, however, is that we wanted to host an event at the end which would allow the winner of Land Surveyors University to be awarded a new GPS unit to use in a global event which enabled surveyors in any area of the world to participate in a global surveying experiment. From today until the end of time, Land Surveyors University will begin globally on the 21st of June and will take place all year around, ending on June 19th, the day before Survey Earth in a Day.

Survey Earth in a Day Event

Survey Earth in a Day Event
Surveyors in the United States are very familiar with the Survey USA event which occurs in the 50 states, but we knew that Land Surveyors United was/is the only true global community of surveyors online.  If an event like Survey Earth were to ever be set into motion, it would have to be Land Surveyors United which made it happen.

Goals for Survey Earth in a Day:

  • Unite as many geospatial professionals as possible in all areas of the world for a single event for the first time in history
  • Give surveyors in areas with little industry representation the opportunity to put their area "on the map" and assist with creating avenues of communication between professionals in all geographic locations.
  • Record survey accurate data for the sake of science and geospatial education
  • Begin building the scaffolding for layers of geospatial data which can be used in future network projects

Here is a bit of background on the Survey Earth in a Day Event:
Planet earth has never been measured with great precision- in its entirety- from thousands of points, simultaneously, during the course of a single day. On Survey Earth Day, the geospatial professionals of the world will have a chance to change that.On the day of the summer solstice June 20 2012, geospatial professionals around the world and members of Land Surveyors United (a global support network for land surveyors) will be simultaneously recording survey grade GPS data from thousands of points around the globe, in order to gain a more accurate understanding of the earth's surface. The first annual Survey Earth in a Day event will be an ongoing annual social surveying education experiment, with a mission not only to learn more about the earth's surface but also monitor its changes over time, as a global community. Our results will change the knowledge we currently have of the shape of the earth and thus provide new information about our planet's surface for the benefit of all HUMANITY. Help the surveying industry and the surveyors in your region of the world by representing your area as we re-measure the entire globe in one single day!
If you are a geospatial professional with access to survey grade GPS equipment, you should consider helping us set a world's record, right from where you live and work! Only a surveyor can provide the kind of precision that will be needed to truly understand the shape of planet earth. Just imagine how much this can help our industry.
